FASTag in India: one vehicle, one tag and a troubleshooting checklist

Understand active-tag status, correct windscreen fitment, vehicle-class matching, blacklisting, balance checks and safe issue resolution.

One vehicle should have one active FASTag

The “One Vehicle One FASTag” approach means one active tag should be associated with one vehicle. The Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL) says older tags linked to the same vehicle may be deactivated, while the owner remains free to recharge the active tag through supported payment methods. Keeping several tags in the glovebox is not a reliable fallback.

Before a long trip, verify the active tag, registered vehicle number, vehicle class, KYC status and balance through the issuer or the official status-check route linked by IHMCL.

Match the tag to the vehicle

A FASTag is issued against a vehicle’s registration details. Do not move a tag between cars, trucks or buses. A mismatch between the tag class and the actual vehicle can cause incorrect charging, exceptions or blacklisting.

Check these fields with the issuer:

  • registration number;
  • registered owner or permitted customer details;
  • vehicle class;
  • chassis details if the permanent number was unavailable when issued;
  • tag status;
  • KYC status;
  • linked mobile number.

If the vehicle was sold, do not leave your payment account or tag active for the buyer. Ask the issuer for the correct closure or transfer process and preserve confirmation.

Affix the tag correctly

IHMCL describes FASTag as an RFID device affixed to the windscreen. Carrying it by hand, leaving it loose or placing more than one active tag near the reader can create failed or incorrect transactions. Follow the issuer’s placement instructions for the vehicle and windscreen.

Do not peel and re-use an old adhesive tag on another vehicle. If the windscreen is replaced or the tag is damaged, contact the issuer for replacement and make sure the prior tag is closed or deactivated.

Understand blacklisting

IHMCL’s FAQ notes that a tag can be blacklisted by the issuer for reasons such as insufficient balance or violations including class mismatch and non-affixation. “Blacklisted” is a status, not a complete diagnosis.

When a tag fails:

  1. Move to a safe position and follow plaza staff instructions.
  2. Check status and balance in the issuer’s official channel.
  3. Note the plaza, lane, date, time and transaction reference.
  4. Contact the issuer using the number on its official website or app.
  5. Ask for the exact reason and a complaint reference.
  6. Do not buy another tag until you understand the status of the existing one.

A successful recharge does not necessarily resolve a KYC, class or duplicate-tag problem.

Keep enough balance without trusting only one alert

Low-balance notifications can be delayed by network or mobile settings. Check before travel and retain a reasonable buffer for the planned route. Use the issuer’s official app, website or supported recharge channel; avoid payment links received from unknown callers.

After recharging, confirm that the issuer shows both updated balance and active status. A payment receipt by itself does not prove the tag is usable at the lane.

Review every toll transaction

Record or download statements regularly. For a suspected duplicate or incorrect debit, keep:

  • vehicle registration number;
  • tag identifier without sharing confidential account credentials;
  • toll-plaza and lane details;
  • timestamp;
  • amount;
  • SMS or statement entry;
  • photographs or receipts when safely available;
  • complaint number.

Raise the dispute through the issuer first and follow the official escalation route. Never disclose an OTP, PIN or full payment credential to someone offering an instant reversal.

Buying or receiving a used vehicle

Before linking a new tag, check whether another active FASTag remains associated with the registration number. The previous owner should close their tag and payment relationship. Use IHMCL’s linked official status-check service and the new issuer’s verification process rather than relying on the seller’s assurance.

Make the FASTag task part of the same handover checklist as registration, insurance and finance closure.

Trip-day checklist

  • Confirm one active tag for the vehicle.
  • Confirm registration number and vehicle class.
  • Confirm KYC does not require action.
  • Confirm balance and recharge settlement.
  • Keep the windscreen tag correctly affixed and unobstructed.
  • Save the issuer’s official support number.
  • Keep an alternative payment method for exceptions while following current lane rules.
  • Review the statement after the trip.

The responsible conclusion

Most FASTag problems are easier to resolve when identity, class, status and transaction evidence are available. Keep one correctly affixed active tag per vehicle, use official issuer channels, close old tags and document disputes. Recheck IHMCL guidance because tolling, KYC and onboarding procedures can change.
