EV charging at home in India: a safe setup and buying checklist
Plan an EV home-charging setup around the vehicle inlet, approved equipment, sanctioned load, earthing, parking access and realistic charging time.

Treat home charging as electrical infrastructure
An electric vehicle can spend many hours connected to a home supply. The right setup is therefore more than a cable that physically fits. It must match the vehicle, charger, sanctioned load, wiring, protection, earthing, parking arrangement and the distribution utility’s requirements.
The Ministry of Power’s 2024 guidelines apply across private, semi-public and public charging infrastructure. They state that residential owners may use an existing electricity connection or choose a separate metered connection with a dedicated EV tariff, subject to the applicable utility framework. That does not mean every existing socket or circuit is suitable for continuous charging.
Use the vehicle manufacturer’s installation requirements and a qualified electrical professional. This guide cannot inspect your building or replace electrical approval.
Record the vehicle-side requirements first
Before requesting quotations, write down:
- vehicle model and exact variant;
- usable and gross battery capacity if both are published;
- AC charging power accepted by the vehicle;
- DC charging power accepted by the vehicle;
- inlet and connector type;
- portable charging cable supplied with the vehicle;
- wall-box model approved or recommended by the manufacturer;
- cable length needed from parking position to inlet;
- warranty conditions related to installation.
A high-power wall box cannot force a car to accept more AC power than its onboard charger supports. Likewise, a vehicle’s peak DC figure does not describe home AC charging speed.
Audit the electrical supply
Ask a qualified electrician or the authorised installer to inspect the proposed circuit and document:
- sanctioned load and typical peak household demand;
- single-phase or three-phase supply;
- cable route, conductor size and voltage drop;
- dedicated protective devices;
- earthing arrangement and measured condition;
- isolation and emergency switching;
- water, impact and heat exposure;
- meter location and any society or landlord permission;
- future load if a second EV may be added.
Do not use a household extension reel, loose adapter or visibly heated socket as a permanent EV solution. Stop charging if plugs, cables or outlets become unusually hot, damaged or wet.
Estimate charging time without promising a perfect number
A simple planning estimate is:
energy to add (kWh) ÷ effective charging power (kW) = ideal hours
Real time is longer because the vehicle can taper power, the charger has losses, temperature matters and the battery-management system protects the pack. The relevant power is the lowest limit in the chain: supply, EVSE, cable and vehicle onboard charger.
Example: adding 30 kWh at an effective 7 kW is ideally about 4.3 hours before losses and taper. If the same vehicle accepts only 3.3 kW AC, installing a nominal 7 kW wall box will not make that session complete in 4.3 hours.

Match the connector, not the marketing term
“Slow”, “fast” and “rapid” are relative labels. Record the actual connector and rated power. NITI Aayog’s e-AMRIT resources describe Indian AC and DC charging standards and point to AIS and BIS requirements. Equipment compatibility should be confirmed against both the vehicle and the current certified charger documentation.
For a home purchase, ask for:
- exact EVSE model number;
- input and output rating;
- compatible connector and cable arrangement;
- applicable certification or type-test evidence;
- ingress and impact rating for the installation location;
- warranty and service contact;
- installation drawing and test report;
- load-management support if household demand is tight.
Avoid buying only from a marketplace title such as “universal EV charger”.
Plan the parking workflow
The cable should reach without crossing a public walkway, sharp edge or vehicle path. The connector should not hang by its pins. If parking is shared, agree who controls access, billing, emergency isolation and future repair.
Apartment residents should resolve society, landlord, electrical-room and parking permissions before purchasing hardware. A quotation is not approval to modify common electrical infrastructure.
Understand home and public charging roles
Home charging can cover routine overnight energy while public charging supports travel, occasional top-ups or drivers without dedicated parking. Your buying decision should survive a week in which the preferred public charger is busy or unavailable.
Test the relevant public network before buying:
- Locate working chargers on frequent routes.
- Confirm the connector matches the shortlisted vehicle.
- Check access hours, parking fees and operator payment method.
- Read recent operational status without treating an app pin as proof the unit works.
- Identify an alternative charger on longer routes.
Questions for the installer
- Is the proposed circuit dedicated to the EVSE?
- What load calculation supports the selected power?
- Which protection and earthing tests will be recorded?
- Who obtains utility or building approvals?
- Will the charger reduce output when household demand rises?
- What happens after a power cut or communication failure?
- Who supports faults, and what is the response time?
- Will I receive a labelled circuit, commissioning report and warranty documents?
Do not accept an undocumented installation because the charger appears to work once.
Handover and routine checks
At commissioning, verify vehicle recognition, start/stop control, protective-device operation and cable reach. Save invoices, serial numbers, test results, application approvals and installer details. Inspect the cable and connector regularly and keep the area free of standing water and physical obstruction.
If the system trips repeatedly, smells hot or shows damage, stop using it and obtain professional inspection. Bypassing protection to keep charging is unsafe.
The responsible conclusion
Choose a home-charging setup from the vehicle inward: accepted AC power and connector first, then approved EVSE, load assessment, dedicated wiring, protection, earthing and practical parking access. The fastest advertised charger is not automatically the best installation. A documented, serviceable system that matches everyday energy needs is the better purchase.
