Electric two-wheeler range in India: a claimed-range buying checklist
Translate an electric scooter or motorcycle claimed range into a realistic route, reserve and charging plan without treating a certified figure as a guarantee.

Start with your route, not the largest advertised number
The useful electric two-wheeler range is the distance that lets you complete your normal route with a sensible reserve and charge reliably before the next trip. Write down a typical weekday, a demanding weekday and an occasional longer journey. Include the return leg, detours, gradients and the distance to an alternative charging location. Do not choose a scooter or motorcycle only because one headline range is larger than another.

A claimed range is a controlled reference for comparison; it is not a guaranteed distance for every rider and route.
Understand what a claimed range represents
India’s AIS-040 standard describes a laboratory procedure for measuring the range of battery-operated vehicles. It covers initial battery charging, application of a prescribed driving cycle, an end-of-test condition and reporting the measured distance in kilometres. The observed value is checked against the manufacturer’s declared value under that procedure. This creates a useful repeatable reference, but it does not recreate every road, load, speed, temperature or battery condition.
Manufacturers may label a figure as IDC, certified, claimed, TrueRange or another clearly defined measure. Do not silently treat different labels as identical. Record the wording, value, variant and source date exactly as published. If a company publishes more than one range—such as a certification value and its own riding estimate—keep them in separate rows rather than choosing the more attractive number.

Match the exact variant and battery
Build a short identity record before comparing range:
- legal company or manufacturer;
- brand, model and exact variant;
- model year or current generation;
- nominal and usable battery capacity, when both are officially stated;
- supplied charger and charging power;
- claimed-range label and value; and
- source URL and verification date.
A larger nominal battery does not by itself prove a proportionally longer route. Vehicle efficiency, usable energy window, motor and controller calibration, tyres, mass, aerodynamics and software all matter. Never calculate an unpublished official range by multiplying battery capacity with another model’s efficiency.
Also check whether a removable-battery subscription, battery-as-a-service plan or optional larger pack changes the quoted vehicle price and ownership terms. The battery on the order form must match the range figure used in your shortlist.
Convert the claim into a conservative route plan
Use a planning allowance rather than presenting an invented “real-world range.” Start with the officially published claimed value, then test several user-selected scenarios in the MyMotorInfo range calculator. For example, a buyer can enter an assumed usable percentage and reserve percentage to see how much route distance remains. The output is a planning estimate, not a new specification for the vehicle.
Keep a reserve that reflects the consequences of missing a charge. A short urban commute with dependable home charging may tolerate a different reserve from a late-night route, hilly road or journey without an alternative outlet. Do not plan regular arrival at zero indicated range. The owner’s manual and battery-management system warnings govern safe use.
Test these scenarios before purchase:
- normal round trip plus routine detour;
- highest weekly distance with passenger or luggage;
- several short trips without charging between them;
- reduced available energy using a reserve selected by you; and
- a missed overnight charge with the next dependable charging opportunity.
The result should answer whether the exact variant fits the route without depending on optimistic assumptions.
Account for conditions that change energy use
NITI Aayog’s e-AMRIT guidance identifies driving style, speed, acceleration and temperature among factors that can affect EV range. Vehicle weight, passenger or cargo load, gradients, stop-start conditions, tyre pressure, wind and accessory use can also change energy demand. Regenerative braking may recover some energy during suitable deceleration, but it cannot make every route equivalent to a certification cycle.
Ask the manufacturer what the dashboard range estimate uses and how it adapts to recent riding. Treat the display as a changing estimate rather than stored kilometres. Compare route energy use over several ordinary days after purchase instead of judging the vehicle from one unusually favourable trip.
Use only tyre sizes and pressures approved for the exact vehicle. Carrying extra load beyond the stated limit is unsafe as well as inefficient. If the route contains sustained high speed or steep gradients, arrange a representative test ride where lawful and safe; a short flat dealership loop is weak evidence for that use case.
Check charging time with the range
Range and charging cannot be evaluated separately. Record the percentage interval attached to every charging-time claim: zero to 80 percent, 20 to 80 percent and zero to 100 percent are different measurements. Also record charger power, battery variant and whether the time applies at home or at a compatible public charger.
Confirm the supplied charger, socket and circuit requirements, sanctioned electrical load, earthing, parking access and installation responsibility. A vehicle that comfortably covers the route may still be unsuitable if the rider cannot charge it safely and reliably. Do not rely on an extension lead, improvised adapter or unapproved charger as the operating plan.
For apartment or rented parking, obtain written permission and a qualified assessment before assuming home charging is available. Verify public-charger compatibility and current operating access directly with the vehicle and network providers. A map pin does not prove that the connector, power, hours and access process fit a particular two-wheeler.
Measure a new vehicle without turning experience into a universal claim
After delivery, log the odometer, starting and ending state of charge, route, load, riding mode, weather and charging energy for several comparable trips. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and allow the dashboard estimate to adapt. This personal log can improve your own planning, but it does not become an official range figure for other riders.
Investigate a sudden or persistent change using the authorised service process. Check tyre pressure, brake drag, software updates, charging completion, error messages and battery diagnostics. Do not open the battery pack or attempt a high-voltage repair. Preserve diagnostic reports if a warranty discussion is needed.
For a used electric two-wheeler, the original claimed range does not prove present battery condition. Request battery identity, authorised state-of-health evidence, remaining warranty, service history and information about crash, flood or high-voltage repair. Test the route with the owner’s permission and safe charging arrangements; leave battery health marked unconfirmed if reliable evidence is unavailable.
Compare range alongside the rest of ownership
A qualifying 100 km-plus claim is only one filter. Compare purchase price, exact variant equipment, battery warranty, charger cover, local service capability, insurance, tyre availability, braking and lighting, payload, seat comfort and total running-cost assumptions. A shorter claimed range with dependable charging and strong service may fit better than a larger number attached to weak local support.
Before paying, save the dated official specification, brochure or order summary that identifies the range and battery. Ask for written clarification when the booking page, brochure and dealer quotation disagree. Confirm the invoiced model and battery again at delivery.
